Family Meeting lit up the tote at Del Mar with a late running victory at odds of 37-1 in the GIII Jimmy Durante S. Dismissed at more than triple her 12-1 morning-line while breaking from post 12 of 13, the dark bay hesitated very briefly at the break and sat well back off the pace in ninth early as Corps de Ballet (Speightstown) clocked opening splits of :23.21 and :48.03. Full of run turning for home, the homebred gobbled up ground as she came flying down the center of the course to overtake Mokat (Uncle Mo) in the final strides and score the first black-type victory of her young career.
“She's a nice filly,” said Aimee Dollase, assistant to winning trainer Tom Proctor. “It's hard to step up to a stakes coming off a maiden win, but she showed some class today. She comes from off the pace, so the way the race unfolded was good for her.”
Winning rider Drayden Van Dyke remarked, “She's a little green; she hasn't quite figured it all out yet. She was idling on me. But I could feel I had a ton of horse under me, so I just wanted to keep her calm. When it came time she went. She's a good one. Can't wait to see what she does next.”
Fourth on debut sprinting over the Delaware main track Sept. 30, Family Meeting earned her diploma next out when switched to the turf and extended to 1 1/16 miles over a soft course at Laurel Nov. 7. The winner is the first foal out of Family Plan (Repriced), a full sister to MGSW Closeout and GSW Capital Request who also produced a yearling filly named Consulting (Maclean's Music).
